About the work
The vase tells the story of Galatea as narrated by Ovid in the
her Metamorphosis. Galatea was a sea nymph in love with Acis, a beautiful young shepherd, who loved her back. However, the Cyclops Polyphemus also had feelings for her. The Cyclops tried to attract Galatea's attention with the sound of his flute, but was unsuccessful. Enraged by jealousy, finding the two lovers in the moonlight on the seashore, he hurled a large boulder of lava at the shepherd, crushing him and leaving him lifeless. Galatea, desperate for having lost her companion, transformed his blood into a spring to keep their love alive.
