About the work

The vase tells the story of the sorceress Circe, a fearsome goddess with a human voice and beautiful hair, whose home was on the wooded island of Aeaea, guarded by wild beasts. According to Homer's Odyssey, the sorceress attracted men with her melodious singing, welcomed them to her table, offering them food in quantity but also poisoned drinks. After hitting them with a stick, she transformed them into pigs, lions, dogs, depending on their character and nature.
