Exhibition "Notes from Venice" by Ca-teter
We are pleased to welcome the artist Jorge Mato, alias ca_teter, who is exhibiting for the first time in Venice, with the exhibition entitled Notes from Venice .
His work is an immersion in the intimate universe of memory and identity. Originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, the artist develops a rich and introspective work, fueled by the emotions of the passage between childhood and adulthood, and by the constant exploration of the relationship between the past and the present. His art resonates with profound personal experiences, marked by the emigration of his family during the last moments of the Uruguayan dictatorship. These experiences emerge in his illustrations and books, which are both fragments of his history and visual metaphors of universal emotions.
ca_teter’s work, which he describes as a relentless search for emotional metaphors, finds a particular resonance in dreams and memories, as well as in the dreamlike universe of director Federico Fellini. Fellini, who drew his dreams upon awakening, seemed to draw on this suspension between the real and the imaginary to give shape to visual stories of great emotional intensity. Similarly, ca_teter begins his creative process with a simple idea or a triggering memory, often noted in his logbooks. This starting point transforms over time into a series of drawings and symbols that become fragments of a dreamlike and personal world. ca_teter’s drawings capture fleeting moments, memories, sensations, dreams and visual metaphors, sometimes left incomplete, as a form of intimate graphic diary. The artist often writes the date and time of each work, thus recording in time a precise moment of creation, a mark between the past and the present. This gesture, simple yet profound, evokes the need to remember, to keep a trace of what defines us.
During her artistic residency in Angoulême, Guadalajara and Bilbao in 2024, the artist explored these themes further through the creation of visual poetry and illustrations inspired by her experiences in Europe, and in particular in Venice, where symbols and images seem to merge between the real and the fantastic. Her book The Great Race , selected for the White Ravens catalogue and awarded in 2021, embodies this poetic and visual approach, where drawing merges with narration to create an immersive experience, both for the eye and the mind.
That is why, we invite the public to immerse themselves in this dream world, inviting them to listen to the artist and smell his notebook. In fact, the drawings exhibited arrived in this notebook and have preserved their scent; To complete his approach to memory, we wanted to highlight the sense of smell, hearing and sight, in order to allow a multisensory experience that immerses visitors in the visual, tactile and emotional universe of ca_teter.
His work is an invitation to dive into these immaterial territories, to explore the meanders of our memory and to discover its mysteries.
